Long story, probably made longer by my ramblingishness.
So, a few months ago I realized that I was getting sicker and sicker. I was sleeping badly, and I was having a lot digestive issues that I don’t think we need to get in to. I was also waking up with a very stuffy nose all the time. Tried all sort of different things to isolate the cause. A last month (month before?) I took the drastic step of removing my nightly alcohol. No more wine, no more whiskey, no more rum. It was truly sad. But, I also immediately lost some weight and felt better. So, realized I must have been drinking a LOT! Right? But wait! Maybe not.
I’ve added some alcohol back into my life in limited amounts with no problems, and I’ve felt much better. Except for this weekend. Yesterday I woke up all stuffy and horrible stomach cramps. Lasted on and off all day. By evening I felt better. Ate my dinner, went to bed. Work up at 4am stuffy, and feeling horrible again. Since the boys at work are getting over a bad cold I decided I had caught a bug. Called off work, and now I’m curled up in bed. Then it occurred to me. I had wine with my dinner on Saturday, then last night I had another large glass before bed to help me sleep since the night before I had been restless. I started browsing the internet and doing all of the symptom checkers I could find and found one common thread. Sulfites.
I thought that was only a red wine thing. I IM’d my sister to ask her if she had problems with sulfites and she gave me a big old yup. She itches. I itch now too, but that may be all in my head. I think she may have a sulfite allergy. I think I may have just developed a sulfite sensitivity.
I had no idea sulfites were in other foods. It’s used as a preservative. I’m going to start paying more attention to the days I feel bad and the food from the day before. There are like 10 different names for sulfites, they all seem to have “sulfide” as part of the name. Gonna read the labels of the other food I ate this weekend. I had ruled out food allergies becasue there wasn’t a common denomiator, but now…hmm.
Did you know a stuffy nose is a very common reaction to sulfite sensitivity?
