Words hurt.

gyp definition

☆ gyp (jip)

  1. an act of cheating; swindle; fraud
  2. a swindler
also gypper gyp′·per or gypster gyp′·ster

Origin: prob. < Gypsy

Just ran across it on someones blog, and she was being harangued for using it.  I’m sure she didn’t mean to be derogatory to a whole race, but the internet is a global community, and we need to be aware.

Don’t use it, okay?

There are a couple of other words you shouldn’t use, that I’m not even comfortable typing.  Not swear words.  I LIKE swear words even though I don’t use them in print.  Personal preference only.  But, if it’s a derogatory word for someones race, religion or a physical feature or condition, don’t use it.  Even if you don’t mean it badly, it sounds bad coming out of your mouth and it makes you look a little ugly.

  1. I so agree.  I feel sick every time someone uses the “R” word.  Even if it is not personally directed at someone with mental retardation, it is insulting and sets people back in terms of the expectations others hold for them.  Good post, Tracy.Kathi

  2. @Still_groovy – The R one is one I can’t even type!  I really find that so very offensive. 😦

  3. To be honest, I sometimes forget about the origin of the word in your post.  My whole childhood was about being called fat by some of the kids at school.  Funny thing it came more from the boys than the girls.  So many people are so mean.  And today’s bully culture seems to have made it much worse.

  4. I’m guilty of using words like that… I cant help feeling that a word’s lineage is not important if the original meaning is obscured by time. That R word that Kathi mentioned has an active connotation referring directly to a group ..That G word’s meaning has been lost to all but the most intelligent folk. Or maybe it’s just cause I’m a moron. Wait.

  5. I went back and added some links in my post, and you are now linked!  Woo-hoo, what an honor, huh?  Kathi

  6. @carolinamuscle – I think it’s necessary to restrain yourself because it’s all part of that big picture.  If it’s okay to use a word that’s insulting because your intent is not to insult, then it’s okay to use any word as long as your intent behind it is good.  I realize that sometimes I’m hyper sensitive to this kind of thing, but I think that’s okay.  It’s so easy to let things slip into our vocabulary and into our daily lives and eventually they become acceptable, but that doesn’t make them right.@Still_groovy – W00t, linkage!

  7. I didnt’t realize gypsy was derogatory. I have called myself a gypsy because I like to travel about. I made my grand girl a gypsy outfit because she liked the spangles and necklaces and lots of sparkly things. So, please forgive me my ignorance. I would never use the term in a mean way. It is all good to me. I don’t use the R word or other negative words. It actually hurts when I hear someone use it.

  8. @GoodGuyTheBoss – I think Gypsy is okay, it’s no different than saying you are French and wearing a Beret.  It’s the word Gyp.  To mean that someone swindled you.  You’re a nice woman.

  9. Ppl just don’t think about it. You use a word or figures of speech that you grew up hearing, never considering what it actually means. Posts like this one are great just to bring awareness of it to ppl’s minds. I too hate the R word and cannot believe the way teenagers throw it around. And I flinch everytime I hear “the pot calling the kettle black”….THINK about what you just said!
