And so begins my experiment in growing my own seed sprout salad.

Peeling away the layer to get to the good stuff

Aww, Look how cute it is in it’s little box

Awww, My seed pictures came out blurry!

I have sunflower, and then a mix which includes alfalfa, broccoli and radish!

I soaked my seeds first.  Some instructions say do, some don’t say anything. I hedged my bets.

Add water at the top every day, at least twice a day, empty from the bottom. The trays have tiny holes for the water to drip down to the bottom. No seeds in the bottom, so four layers of seeds. The trays also have some very slightly raised grooves so my seeds don’t sit flat on the plastic bottom.  Of course you don’t need to invest the $15.00 in the tower of plastic growing power. You can do this in a glass jar. I just wanted to make this as idiot proof as possible. happy

  1. This is gonna be fun to watch.

  2. @carolinamuscle – Akin to watching grass grow?

  3. @tracy – hahahaha… no, not all… this is gonna be cool… like an experiment. You can be the mad scientist. I’ll be Igor.

  4. @carolinamuscle – Will you call me Master?

  5. @tracy – only if you let me.

  6. @tracy – I saw the master comment before I read the whole thing.    Ok – mb get your mind out of the gutter.I have thought about growing sprouts before and I even have that container but then I heard that even some seeds have issues with whatever makes people sick from sprouts.  Have you heard that?  These days I am not sure I could eat them but I love them and Erik loves them.

  7. @skanickadee – The only issues I have heard with sprouts is the same kind of issues you get with veggies coming from contaminated farms.  Gotta rinse them regularly so and make sure everything is clean. It’s not the sprouts so much as the environment they’re raised in. I think you’re probably much better off with this kind of container than with the random containers and paper towels that a lot of home users use.  It’s more of an enclosed environment. I guess we’ll find out! I will be sad if they get mildewy or something. 😦

  8. @tracy – “Gotta rinse them regularly so and make sure everything is clean”  I’m guessing you mean the container and not the sprouts?  I just went and checked in the garage and the box for the sprout container is still in the cabinet so I am assuming the container is in there.  It is in a spot that I can’t get to but I will have Craig pull it down tonight.Wow if I could eat sprouts, I would jump for joy.  I think I will check out that link you posted.  Thanks T!!!

  9. @skanickadee – No, I mean the sprouts!

  10. @tracy – Thanks for the clarification!

  11. Nom nom nom. I had sunflower sprouts recently and I’m in love! I’ve eaten alfalfa as well, and it’s good but not nearly as tasty. When they are edible, I’d love to get your opinions on the differences in tastes among all your varieties. Science for the win!

  12. Maybe a time lapse series would be cool. 😀

  13. Sounds like you’re having lots of fun! Hope you will get nice sprouts. Good luck!

  14. Fun times, I’ve got to try that as I love sprouts on a hummus sandwhich, and we eat a lot of hummus in this house.

  15. I think it’s fun and pride to have food grown by our hands.Waiting and watching.
