Today I went for my followup hearing test and then immediately after I went for my BAER test.
I learned some interesting things:
1. I am able to stay perfectly still and perfectly relaxed while loud sounds are banging in my eardrums, which cut the test time from 30 minutes to 12. Thank you Yoga!
2. My ear canals are so small that they went from using the adolescent devices to the pediatric size.
3. Chemotherapy frequently causes hearing loss. Cisplatin the chemo drug I had is one of the forerunners when it comes to this side effect. (I had hearing loss before chemo)
4. My hearing has improved greatly.
YUP! You read that right! They can’t explain it, but the Audiologist MD said she’s seen it happen before. There is a six month window after chemo where your hearing can be affected. Normally it’s a hearing loss but it has happened before where it’s a loss reversal.
Last test on the left, todays on the right. That big dip was the huge loss that is now even. And it’s not bad test results last time because there is actually another test that was done prior that showed the same thing!
How weird is that!! My left ear is now almost normal, and my right ear while still needing a hearing aid is much better. No way to know how long it will last, could suddenly start reversing again or could be permanent. Freaky.
No official results on the BAER test but unofficially she said if she were forced to answer it looks pretty normal so probably no tumors on my auditory nerves.
All in all, a much better day than expected.
